Making the bathroom look bigger

Remodeling a bathroom in an old house without enlarging the space is a real challenge. Bathrooms in old homes are rarely larger than 5 x 8 feet. The right way to approach the problem is to increase physical space by scaling down bath furniture and clutter. Compact, elongated toilets, flat-bottomed, low-walled bathtubs and showers with sliding doors are immediate space savers.

Compact toilets with a round front will also save water.  Glass sliding shower screens economize movement while creating the appearance of more space. Opting for petite vanities, smaller cabinets and wall-mounted sinks will also increase the remaining floor space. Designing storage or showers around corners also helps.

Other techniques include using  larger tiles and mirrors to create an illusion of more space. Scattered small lighting sources or even colored lights also create a roomy atmosphere. Finally, light or warm colors and shades are also the best for small spaces.
