January 14, 2008

The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) has developed a punch list of 41 guidelines that range from the essential to the highly recommended. Here are just a few:

  • at least 48 inches of clear space in front of a toilet and 16 inches on each side (measured from the fixture’s centerline)

Bathroom Design Idea: European Charm

January 10, 2008

With so many ancient treasures near at hand yet so much that had to be replaced after World War II, Europe evolved a uniquely rich form of transitional style. That style is amply evidenced in this bath. Open spaces decorated with only a few grand gestures, this bath are appointed with just the right mix of modern conveniences and timeless comforts. The result: quietly romantic retreats.

Bathroom Design Idea: Classic Design

January 10, 2008

This stunning bathroom design, while equipped with modern conveniences we’ve come to depend on, clearly hearkens back to the elegant, many-layered past. In this bath, neutral colors show how rich and eloquent they can be. Light-capturing white and special touches, like the artworks matted in gold, add to the quietly opulent mood.

Bathroom Design Idea: Exploring Style

January 10, 2008

In home designs, bathrooms are often given low priority. During a remodel, the bathroom may fall by the wayside behind more public spaces like the kitchen. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Every popular decorating style can be interpreted for the bath.

Bathroom Design Idea: Streamlining a Vintage Look

January 10, 2008

In the baths shown here, white predominates, cloaking all with a clean yet very romantic aura. The only other tones in the room are undemanding neutrals: the tan of a wicker basket; the soft brown of a weathered wood armoire; the deeper, lustrous brown of wood strip flooring.

Make Your Point With Emphasis

January 10, 2008

Emphasis is the creation of a focal point, a dominant item of interest in an environment. Designers usually counsel clients to find or create a focal point in each room as a first step toward organizing the space attractively. In the bathroom, it may be an imposing double vanity with a pair of mirrors or a big soaking tub angled in the corner opposite the door.

Selecting Bathroom Fixtures

January 10, 2008

Selecting bathroom fixtures and their fittings requires a bit of know-how, along with a sense of style. Some fixtures and fittings have changed in style over the years since indoor plumbing first transformed human existence, but their functions have undergone only minor changes.

Bathroom Safety

January 10, 2008

Bathroom safety and future maintenance require careful consideration. Nonslip flooring, handrails or grab bars for tubs and showers, pressure-balancing valves on showerheads to protect against scalding, and tempered glass for shower doors are some of the safety basics your installer should consider nonnegotiable.

Floor and Wall Surfaces for Bathrooms

January 10, 2008

Virtually any material can be used to surface walls and floors in the bathroom as long as it’s waterproof, either naturally or by means of an impervious finish. If your choice is wallcovering, make sure it’s vinyl, and use moisture-resistant adhesive not ordinary wallpaper paste.

Miniature Marvels Kids’ Bathroom Decorating Idea

January 10, 2008

At one time, a bath designed just for children was a novel idea, but today, many homes have a bath reserved just for the family’s children. In a supremely kid-friendly bath like this, the only thing that remains the same as in a conventional bath is the ironclad rule: Never leave a child in the tub unattended for even a moment.

Bright White

January 10, 2008

One of the reasons white remains right in so many homeowners’ minds is obviously that “white goes with everything.” White fixtures look peaceful against pale blue walls today, brilliant against burgundy red ones tomorrow.

Contemporary Bathrooms

January 10, 2008

“Contemporary,” sometimes used interchangeably with the word “modern,” is less a structured concept and more a way of life. Contemporary is cool and clean and can be as casual or as elegant as you please. Because so much of a bath is dominated by modern fixtures anyway, many people simply choose contemporary style, regardless of what they’re using in the rest of the house.

Drawing from Nature

January 10, 2008

If privacy isn’t a problem on your property, why not treat your bath to the same scenic pleasures you give your living room? The lovely view is made even more inspiring with wonderful framing. A half-round window as long as the soaking tub is a dramatic focal point, its pleasing demi-lune shape evoking the classic curve of Palladian windows but with much more dash.

Space and Light

January 10, 2008

Some might say space and light are among the few real luxuries. Some also think space and light should be the only components of a bathroom design. Learn about how minimalism brings elegance of simplicity to design on this website.

Basic Bath Considerations

January 10, 2008

If you’ve ever wondered why many bathrooms are back-to-back or why professionals tell you to avoid moving fixtures, it’s because of all the plumbing and mechanical systems you can’t see.

I read somewhere that thousands of people get injured falling in their bathrooms. What can I do to prevent falls in my new bath?

January 10, 2008

Because bathrooms have so many fixtures crammed into a small space and because the surfaces are often wet, falls are very common. Bathtubs and toilets are two high-risk areas. To reduce risk, consider replacing a bathtub with a shower. Choose a shower that has a low threshold so someone with limited agility can get in and out easily. Ideally, the shower should be able to accommodate a wheel chair. The shower should be equipped with a seat and include a flexible hand-held shower head to make it easier to bathe.

Get the most out of your space

January 10, 2008

The priority is storage that doesn’t draw attention to itself. The pictured bathroom works well because the large cupboard is low-level and hidden beneath two curvaceous, countertop sinks. The cupboard doors are painted to blend with the tile surrounds and are handle-free, so your eyes aren’t drawn to it, but to what’s going on above, which is far more interesting.

Can I change the entire layout of my bathroom during my bathroom remodeling project?

January 10, 2008
On a large-scale bathroom remodeling project, the bathroom layout can be changed to just about any configuration. However, it is often more affordable to let the plumbing layout of your present bathroom define your bathroom remodeling project.

What features are currently the most popular in bathrooms?

January 10, 2008

Second sinks are very popular because they allow two people to use the bathroom at the same time. Some people are putting in separate toilets and even separate showers. Many people replace tubs with showers.

Reflective outlook

January 10, 2008

Letting scenery take pride of place in a bathroom doesn’t have to be at the expense of an interesting interior. One way to make the most of both indoors and outdoors is to have them stand in quiet contrast.
