This is a collection of walk-in steam showers with an interesting feature: the water heats up before it enters the shower, so the first drop of water you touch is hot.  You can control the temperature via a digital thermometer.  The steam room portion of the shower includes aromatherapy.  One other neat feature of these showers is that they sit on your existing bathroom tile/floor.  I have been hesitant to recommend steam showers in the past because I am not a fan of walking around on acrylic — it is just too thin and creaky.  These showers enclose the existing tile, so they are far more solid.  I found them here.

Whirlpool tubs

Whirlpool bathtubs increase the resale value of a home. If you are thinking of a bathroom renovation, it might be a good idea to install one.  

Why? Well, it conveys a feeling of relaxation and premium luxury. These are intangibles that no person can accurately quantify. And the therapeutic benefits are real. Sore joints, aching muscles and even arthritis are relieved by the heat and massage components of the whirlpool tub.

The repeated actions of bubble jets and pressure increase blood circulation, invigorate the skin and relieve tension. Some hospitals even use whirlpool tub therapy for expectant mothers who are about to deliver their babies. The warm water and gentle waves ease the stress and prepare them better for labor. 

But for the family, the other benefits are immense: A place for bonding and camaraderie, fun and intimacy. If you have to just get away from it all, you need not go to a faraway place. Just slip into the watery bliss of your own whirlpool bathtub.

Bathroom airbath

The Big Hippo Bathroom Co. defines airbath as a “unique luxury product that is different from other whirlpools and spa baths.”

To be more specific, airbaths utilize an air injection system from the base of the tub. Hundreds of tiny microjets inject warm water into the air stream so that warm bubbles will wrap the body and prevent uneven temperature changes.  The effect is a warm and thorough massage on your skin.  This is different from the traditional whirlpool that just pumps and recirculates the water through side jets.

Apollo Airbath Ltd. is claiming that the Ballerina (topmost picture) is the world’s first back to the wall free standing airbath. It is suited for showering and bathing. Its front bow and mounted taps in the center provide a balanced and sturdy orientation. Brass or chrome-plated claw feet, blow dry feature to prevent bacteria build up and its microjet system are included.

The Countess (right) is a soaking tub fit for two. Sloping backets, underwater lights and contoured backrests are really intended for long relaxing moments.

Shower cabins

Shower cabins are the European equivalent of steam showers here in the U.S. Digitally controlled multiple jet showers and steam bath system are the main highlights.

While the functions and features may be comparable it is how they “dress up” the cabin and incorporate it into the bathroom that makes all the difference. 

BluBleu of Italy’s stunning Box Sabi blends into the wall and is a refreshing idea for a built-in shower. A contrasting wood frame finish will accent its rectangle shape and offset the predominant colors of the wall. The tempered glass and sliding door and antibacterial acrylic material help keep it perpetually clean and presentable.

Making the bathroom look bigger

Remodeling a bathroom in an old house without enlarging the space is a real challenge. Bathrooms in old homes are rarely larger than 5 x 8 feet. The right way to approach the problem is to increase physical space by scaling down bath furniture and clutter. Compact, elongated toilets, flat-bottomed, low-walled bathtubs and showers with sliding doors are immediate space savers.

Compact toilets with a round front will also save water.  Glass sliding shower screens economize movement while creating the appearance of more space. Opting for petite vanities, smaller cabinets and wall-mounted sinks will also increase the remaining floor space. Designing storage or showers around corners also helps.

Other techniques include using  larger tiles and mirrors to create an illusion of more space. Scattered small lighting sources or even colored lights also create a roomy atmosphere. Finally, light or warm colors and shades are also the best for small spaces.

Minimalist bathroom designs

Minimalism is subtraction.

It is both timeless and universal.

You are safe and can never go wrong with a minimalist bathroom design.

Bare, clutter-free, spare, stripped down, smooth, clean lines, colors and textures are some of the words to describe minimalism. Wall-mounted vanities and fixtures, and monochrome or muted colors are some elements of the minimalist design aesthetic.

Kohler uses wall-mounted vanities and space saving sinks. Porcher’s Epic bath collection of basin, toilet and bidet uses crisp lines to reflect European style minimalism. 

Designing a spa bathroom

The baby boomers are used to a comfortable lifestyle and are willing to spend for it–bathroom remodeling included.

According to Lowe’s, a spa bathroom remodel would cost in the 5-figure range and take roughly 6 weeks to complete, depending on your choice of materials and contractor.

Key design points include: lighting scheme, color coordinated furniture and tiles, and matching showerhead and faucet. The list is quite extensive :cabinetry and countertops, tiles, plumbing, paint, lights, doors, windows and accessories.  Vanity sinks and faucets, shower systems, vanity mirror and closets are included.

Steam is in

One bathroom remodeling trend that is really hot (no pun intended) is steam–lots of it. Steam room, steam shower and steam bath are becoming more and more common. Many see it as both an investment in health and home. A general bathroom remodel to include this has to consider space for the standalone steam and shower unit. Also keep in mind the need for a seat or bench, drainage, wood or tile surfaces and insulated door.

And speaking of heat, electric mats and heated tiles are also part of some bathroom designs. Just put them under the tiles or floors of open showers. That makes walking on cold tiles a thing of the past.

Latest bathroom remodeling trends

A recent survey of bathroom remodeling experts confirms a growing emphasis on bathroom luxury, style and comfort. A case in point is preference for big shower areas with hinged glass doors. Hinge doors over glass sliding doors. This is to replicate the spa and sauna experience. More glass, more space is the way to go.  Shower walls, stylish grab bars (!) and heated tiles are also becoming popular choices. These not only provide extra comfort but upgraded bathrooms also increase the home’s value.

Times are hard, and most people who are remodeling are doing it on a budget.  If you are looking to remodel your bathroom on the cheap, Home Depot is a great place to start.  There are several companies (Kohler, MAAX, American Standard, and Pegasus) who manufacture a particularly affordable series of items just for Home Depots.  In many cases, the quality is similar to their mainstream stuff that you will find in the kitchen and bath showrooms, but without all the bells and whistles.  Typically, the warranty and service won’t be as good.  Nevertheless, it’s a great way to remodel without spending a lot.
